Welcome to Blog To Fit

We're David Wright and Tara Cain, two bloggers who have come together to write about our attempts to lose weight. We're like a team of super heroes, minus the cool costumes, and well, super powers of any kind, except the ability to gain weight by simply being NEAR food.

Wednesday Weigh In Feb. 25, 2009

The challenge

Today is Ash Wednesday. Every year I ignore it. No actually, that’s not true. Every year I fill my face with pancakes the day before and then scoff at anyone foolish enough to give something up for 40 straight days on Ash Wednesday.

This year is different. I am giving up crap.

I have tried moderating the chocolate and the biscuits and the ice cream but it just doesn’t work. Once I have one I want another. Once I’ve had another I’m not happy until they have all gone.
If I didn’t open the packet in the first place I would be fine, but once that seal is broken I am done for.

So, I am issuing you all a challenge. Can you give up refined sugar for 40 days?
It’s not long really. I mean, what’s 40 days out of 365?
I gave up chocolate once and didn’t eat a jot for 2 weeks and when I tried it at the end of this period I felt really sick.
I am hoping for this same effect with sugar. That and I’d like to give my internal organs a fighting chance by giving them a bit of a clear out.

So for me that means no biscuits, no cake, no toffee popcorn, no Cola (I can see DW and Turf Dad shaking their heads now!) and no pinching chocolate from the children’s treat tins.

I know it’s going to be really tough but somehow having a defined period of time to do it will help – plus I’ve got all you to answer to!

Anyone care to join me – or give up something else for your Blog To Fit buddies?

Now, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-In

Tara Cain

The stats:

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 140 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 164 lbs.
  • Weight today: 164lbs
  • Amount lost this week: 0lb

David Wright

Well, with all the Valentine’s Day candy safely out of the house (and by out of the house, I mean eaten), I was able to return to a normal eating habit this week. I even ate a few vegetables! I also lost two pounds – and without the help of laxative-like chocolates, thank you.

One of the hard parts about losing weight for me is to avoid the late night snacking I am prone to doing. It’s tough, but most nights, I’m good.

What I haven’t been able to do though, is get off my butt this week to exercise.

I’ve been pretty busy, but when am I not? So, this week I’m going to challenge myself to walk every day for at least half an hour. Of course, the hardest part about walking most days is just getting out of the house. Once I’m out, I will likely push myself to go longer.

At least that’s the plan.

The stats: David Wright

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 250 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 329 lbs.
  • Weight today: 327 lbs.
  • Amount lost this week: 2 lbs.
  • Total lost since Nov. 19: 23 pounds

Now it’s your turn. Share your success (or setback) story with us.

Wednesday Weigh-In Feb. 18, 2009

by Tara Cain on February 18, 2009
in Wednesday Weigh-In

This week I feel like my insides have turned to fruit.

I have eaten so many apples, bananas, grapefruit, pears and grapes that my organs feel like mush!

In my bid to stop with the snacking (oh the endless snacking) I have turned to my friend the crisp, tart apple for help.

And the sweet satsuma, the so-juicy-the-juice-drips-down-your-chin-plum and don’t even get me started on what happens to your guts when you devour a bowl of cherries in one sitting! It’s not pretty.

But I have to say, even though it has taken me all week, I now actually look forward to my fruit shot every day.
Have I retrained my taste buds? I’m not sure. I’d still happily fill up on chocolate biscuits and toast, but I don’t actually feel like I’m force feeding myself good stuff now. A grapefruit in the morning doesn’t feel like a chore.

And I do find that if I pretend those chocolate fingers aren’t there, if I ignore their little calls for me to come on over to the cupboard, just a quick visit, just open the cupboard door and take a look at us, ooo look at our nice sleek box, ooo just open us up and have a sniff . .  . Anyway, if I block out their urgent calls to me and don’t have one, I’m fine. An apple suits me just fine and dandy.

So this new revelation hasn’t altered my stats any as I only had the breakthrough on Monday, so I’m pretty sure there will be success next week.

Oh and I will be setting myself – and anyone who wants to join in – a challenge next week . . .

This week was probably my worst since starting. Why? Well, I’d like to blame Valentine’s Day, but nobody forced me to pig out on chocolate. I just did. Of course, the side effects of my indulgences did inspire a humorous post over at BloggerDad today.

At any rate, no loss this week. On the good side, no gain, either. I’ll be interested in seeing what Tara has planned next week.

If it involves chocolate eating and marathon toilet sitting, I’m afraid I’m already up on my competitors.

Also, if I may, Happy Birthday to my best friend (and recent BlogToFit convert) Lisa, who is feeling a bit down on her weight loss struggles of late. Good luck, Lisa. I believe in you!

Wednesday Weigh-In Feb. 11, 2009

by David Wright on February 11, 2009
in Wednesday Weigh-In

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to lose weight?

Being fat, you sometimes get desperate to lose weight and you sometimes do some crazy things to try and drop pounds more quickly than you should.

I remember a few occasions where I wanted to lose weight in a hurry, all of them involving a girl that I wanted to impress.

I would work out a lot, stop eating, or attempt to lose 100 pounds in water weight in a steam room in one afternoon.

Of course, such last minute tactics never work. Most of them, in fact, have negative side effects.

  • Work out too much and you could burn out or injure yourself (done that)
  • Stop eating and you will slow down your metabolism and make it harder to lose weight
  • The steam room thing might work for a couple pounds in a pinch, but you usually feel like crap

As crazy as I was to believe I could drop a lot of pounds quickly, or that the weight loss would even make that much of a difference to whatever girl I was trying to impress, I never really tried anything too crazy like a coffee enema or something you hear about other people doing.

How about you? What’s the wackiest thing you’ve ever done in attempt to lose weight? How did it work out for you?

Is it possible to be too busy to lose weight?
I only ask because that’s how it feels for me right now.
Trying to get my fledgling business off the ground is taking up every moment of my time as I am trying to fit as much in as I can in those precious hours between dropping the children off at school and picking them up in the afternoon.

So I haven’t walked all week, I’ve eaten on the run and I’ve reached for the chocolate when I needed a boost. And I feel so silly because I know the only reason I need a boost is because I’m not exercising.
But hey ho, that’s life I suppose.

The stats: Tara Cain

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 140 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 163 lbs.
  • Weight today: 164lbs
  • Amount lost this week: +1 lb

David Wright

The weight loss slowed down a bit this week, to a more reasonable two pound loss. Which is good, considering my hectic schedule last week and that I pigged out a couple of times on pasta.

The stats: David Wright

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 250 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 334 lbs.
  • Weight today: 329 lbs.
  • Amount lost this week: 2 lbs.
  • Total lost since Nov. 19: 21 pounds

Changes in the wind

by David Wright on February 10, 2009
in Uncategorized

There will be some changes here at Blog To Fit.

As many of you likely read on Thursday, David Fowler has had to drop out of the blogging world for a while. This move, while unfortunate for his many readers – here and at his own blog, was necessary for the stability of his home life.

We will miss Fowler’s presence. His dedication to fitness, his heartfelt and inspirational writing and hilarious comments have become a large part of this blog’s personality. And of course, he is one of the most genuine, nicest people we’ve had the pleasure of working with. We wish him well in all his efforts and he is, of course, welcome back here at any time.

Some of you have since wondered what all this means for Blog To Fit, since Dave is one of the original three members of our group blog.

Well, we thought about it long and hard. Truth is, we’ve both been struggling to make enough time for BlogToFit in recent weeks. On top of our own blogs, we are both attempting to find work after being laid off last year.

It was one thing when the work was split among three people. Split among two, a bit harder. In short, we can’t justify spending the same amount of time on this site, given our economic situations.

We considered closing up shop, but thought better of it. We’ve made too many friends here and that we’ve been able to offer some inspiration and a platform for others attempting to get fit, means a lot to us. And let’s face it, if we give up on this, it will be all to easy for both of us to stop our efforts and pack on pounds.

So, we will be cutting back the site’s posting schedule to once per week, the weekly Wednesday Weigh-In.

We may post other posts from time to time as time and inspiration permits, but for now, we feel it best to scale back in order to keep moving forward.

While we are scaling back, we will be adding a bit more to our Wednesday Weigh-Ins, rather than the quick summaries you’ve come to expect. We hope that you will continue to be part of our efforts to get fit and look forward to seeing you at tomorrow’s Wednesday Weigh-In.

Getting Fit Takes Sacrifice And Dedication

by David Fowler on February 5, 2009
in Uncategorized

Getting fit and losing weight takes time – and time is a luxury I have little of, so I’m forced to make the best use of what I have. To that end I’ve made a decision to step away from blogging.

Picture: super-c

Until a couple of days ago I had no such plans, but then something was said that made me re-evaluate my position.

Over the last few weeks I’ve come to realise that the important things in my life aren’t going to get the attention they deserve when a vast chunk of my day is spent blogging.

In the last three weeks I’ve made some excellent progress with my fitness and that’s largely due to the fact I’ve spent time exercising at the expense of reading and writing blog posts.

There are other issues involved in my decision and I’d encourage you to pop over to Teach My Children Well if you want to know what they are.

I’m getting fit and I’m getting lean. As of this morning I weigh 193.5lbs, which is half a pound down on Wednesday. I feel I can go the whole way now and that’s exactly what I intend to do.

I’ve enjoyed your support and I’ve enjoyed cheering you on as well. There’s no doubt that sharing my thoughts with you here and reading your responses has helped me to make progress, but whilst I’ve discovered that I can find the time to get fit, I’ve also realised that I can’t find the time to write about it as well, I hope you understand.

My biggest regret is that I’ve messed Tara and Dave about with my decision to step away. They now have to decide whether to continue with BlogToFit. I know they’re considering they’re own position and I also know they’ll post something next week when they’ve made their decision.

Please feel free to share your thoughts below but please understand there might be a delay in my response.

I won’t be dropping off the face of the earth, but I will be restricting my online presence for the next two months.

Thank you all for your support

AND…. Tara whose Sticky Fingers on the keyboard have kept me entertained and to Dave the Blogger Dad whose cartooning genius in the BTF header made me look better than I do – my special thanks to you both for being the most excellent colleagues and friends.

I wish you all well in your weight loss and fitness goals.

Dave
