We're David Wright and Tara Cain, two bloggers who have come together to write about our attempts to lose weight. We're like a team of super heroes, minus the cool costumes, and well, super powers of any kind, except the ability to gain weight by simply being NEAR food.

Wednesday Weigh-In April 29, 2009

Does the sun make you bloom?

I had the best weekend with the children.

Here in the UK the sun came out, spring was in the air and we rediscovered the outdoors with a vengeance.

We played in the garden (mainly in the wheelbarrow, which meant a spot of weightlifting for me as I heaved them around the lawn!), we went for walks, we climbed styles, we went bike riding and we took deep, full breaths of country air.

I don’t know about you, but when the sun comes out I feel, well, more alive. I want to go out and exercise, to run around with my children and to feel tired at the end of the day because I’ve actually done something.

My kids adore the outdoors. A measure of a good day in our household is how much dirt is under their fingernails. There was a lot of dirt after this weekend.

Of course there was a downside. There is always a downside!

We visited my friend Suzanne, whose husband is a bit of a cook. As we arrived at their house the smell of freshly baked cookies filled the air.

I don’t think I need to say any more. Just know that the batch he gave us to bring home? Lasted a day. Ok, ok, it was an hour, but hubby helped out . . .

Now, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-In

David Wright

Back on track this week, half-way. I ate better than the week before but I got zero exercise. Well, unless you count chasing a two year old around the house for a nightly game of hide and seek/chase the toddler.  We also play indoors basketball every night, but I’m afraid I didn’t burn enough calories to lose more than a pound.

The stats: David Wright

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 250 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 326 lbs.
  • Weight today: 325 lbs.
  • Amount lost this week: 1 lbs.
  • Total lost since Nov. 19: 25 pounds

Tara Cain

Homebaked cookies aside, I’ve been so so this week. However I haven’t moved a muscle.
I’ve been rooted to my home office chair and can actually feel my ass spreading across the chair. The most exercise I’ve had is getting up to make a cup of tea. Which I do about 15 times a day – what can I tell you, I’m a tea addict.

I must must must must up my activity levels or I am in danger of becoming one with the office furniture.
The trouble is I am so busy I feel ‘guilty’ for taking an hour off and going for a walk.
I need one of you to come round, knock on my front door and drag me out!

The stats:

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 140 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 164 lbs.
  • Weight today: 164lbs
  • Amount lost this week: 0lb

Guest Post : Sean Platt / Wednesday Weigh-In April 22, 2009

by David Wright on April 22, 2009
in Wednesday Weigh-In

We have a special guest today at Blog To Fit, none other than Writer DadSean Platt. And he has a confession to make.

I was fit once, before love reduced me to a soft gooey middle for the second time.

When I first met my wife, I was at my ideal body weight. Always lean and rarely hungry, I felt like I had enough energy to climb a mountain and run down the other side. I went to the gym several times a week and never missed a workout. I ate well and made sure to get great sleep every night. In short, all cylinders were firing and life was good.

My wife and I were courting one another and though this was a magical time, it didn’t take long for our constant meals out to become constant meals in. My wife Cindy is a sensational cook. One of her favorite things to prepare is pasta, which also happens to be one of my favorite things to eat. Because she is a wonderful soul, Cindy would spend nearly every night making me a pound of pasta in sauces I would have previously dreamt of had I had the imagination to crave something so amazing. Because I often endeavor to match her generosity, I would spend nearly every night inhaling noodles to memory.

All semblance of a balanced diet melted alongside my once trim middle. My relaxed life fit my new relaxed jeans.

A few years passed until we found ourselves pregnant with our first child. Double doses of delicious for her meant double doses of delicious for me. I was eating for three after all (I think I actually said that once).

I remember the moment I knew beyond shadow I needed a change. I was standing beneath a scalding shower as I realized I was knocking on 30’s door and needed to do a better job of staying in shape. I could look at my family tree and easily extrapolate the girth of my own trunk if I didn’t do something to change my patterns.

So I did. It was back to the gym with rhythm, routine, and renewed dedication. I carried my commitment until it grew too heavy, right around the month we moved into a new house and opened a preschool.

It’s been lying forgotten on the floor since.

I was able to ignore it for a while without it making much of a difference. My days were spent on my feet, chasing toddlers and bouncing all about. But in the last six months as I’ve transitioned to the life of a writer, I’ve started to spend the majority of my daytime minutes sitting (and sometimes eating peanut M&M’s).

Guess who’s getting fat?

Uh… yeah, that would be me. But I had another one of those epiphanies over the weekend. No more for me. I’m ridding myself of sugar for at least a month and I won’t miss a single day of exercise for a long, long while.

No one will ever live inside this body but me, it will be mine until the second it produces breath no longer. I know I must to all I can to keep it running clean, yet am sometimes so willing to trade a momentary surge of false satisfaction for the forever my body so rightly deserves.

One of my best friends recently said, “forever isn’t as long as it used to be.”

He’s absolutely right.

Sean Platt is a dad, ghostwriter and man who knows what he needs to do.

Now, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-In

David Wright

This week, I had birthday cake. Lots of birthday cake to celebrate my son’s second birthday.

I told myself I would be good, but I am powerless in the presence of cake. I’m like Tara with her chocolates!

And once I had the cake, I was already off the wagon and what’s another few bad food choices? Like those chips we bought for the party? Man, we bought a lot of chips!

So, yeah. Shame is my name this week.

However, I am glad to say the cake is now gone. And I’ve got no other junk food in the house, so everything is back on track.

The stats: David Wright

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 250 lbs.
  • Weight 2 weeks ago: 326 lbs.
  • Weight today: 326 lbs.
  • Amount lost this week: 0 lbs.
  • Total lost since Nov. 19: 24 pounds

Tara Cain

I’ve had a disaster this week. I’ve been nosedeep in work and so end up thinking ‘bugger, I haven’t eaten’ and so snack on the first thing that comes into view when I crawl into the kitchen.
It’s usually toast or a biscuit or a chunk of cheese which I wolf down so fast that a mere half an hour later I’m starving again.

I haven’t exercised, I’ve grabbed a chocolate bar on the way out of the petrol station to ‘keep me going’ and I’ve basically turned into a large gelatinous blob.
Getting over this Easter slump has been harder thatn I thought. I ‘meant’ to go to a pilates class today but went to lunch with a friend instead. I ‘meant’ to walk into town, but watered the garden instead.

I need to get off my fat ass and get motivated again!

The stats:

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 140 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 164 lbs.
  • Weight today: 164lbs
  • Amount lost this week: 0lb

Wednesday Weigh-In April 15, 2009

by David Wright on April 15, 2009
in Wednesday Weigh-In

My son motivates me

I got in some walking with my son this week, which was nice. He enjoys the outdoors a lot, and is always up for a ride in his stroller. He’ll be two this weekend is already super active! Way more active than his dad.

He LOVES playing outside and especially loves playing basketball. He is a great shot for a two year old. He’s also good at throwing a football, though nobody showed him how.

We watched football on TV from time to time, he likes watching or playing any activity involving balls. Soon, he started mimicking the quarterback’s forward arm motion. My son wasn’t even holding a ball, he just made that forward motion. My parents got him a little football and he picked it up and instantly threw it exactly like a quarterback! An awesome throw right to his mommy!

I look forward to being fit enough to play sports with him as he gets older.

Catching our breaths

Web-wise it’s been a hectic week for Tara and I.

We’ve both been busy trying to get separate web projects off the ground, so we’ve been a bit absent from the comments section here and at your blogs. For that, we apologize. We’re still keeping at this blog, though, with our weekly weigh-ins and reading your updates.

Now that my new site is up, I can step back and comment a bit more at my various stops along the web.

Now, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-In

David Wright

This week, I was so busy I barely had time to eat. While that is usually a detriment to my eating, I also didn’t have time to shop, so there wasn’t much food to snack on. That, plus the walking seemed to do the trick. Result: Loss of two pounds.

The stats: David Wright

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 250 lbs.
  • Weight 2 weeks ago: 328 lbs.
  • Weight today: 326 lbs.
  • Amount lost this week: 2 lbs.
  • Total lost since Nov. 19: 24 pounds

Tara Cain

I’ve gone through Easter with two young children – need I say more?
Chocolate has been swishing through my veins and has made me feel, well, pretty crap actually.

On the plus side, I have taken time off this week and am spending it with my family. We’ve been for days out, visited friends, played in the garden, played wrestling – it has been a blast.

All that playing and going out has meant I’ve snacked quite heavily on stuff I would never normally entertain, but when someone puts a chocolate chip muffin under my nose and we’re sat in the middle of a field with no where to run, I just can’t say no.
Plus we’ve resorted to take aways a lot too, as when you’ve been playing cricket in the garden, doing star jumps on the trampoline and showing everyone how fab I am at British Bulldog, there is no way I have the energy to come in and cook!

The stats:

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 140 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 164 lbs.
  • Weight today: 164lbs
  • Amount lost this week: 0lb

Wednesday Weigh-In April 8, 2009

by admin on April 8, 2009
in Wednesday Weigh-In

Welcome back!

Sorry for the late start today. David had some technical difficulties with his computer connection late last night.

Better late than never, though, right?

Hope you all enjoyed our little April Fool’s Day gag – we’ll get to changing the header back a bit later.

No, we haven’t changed our plans, though gaining weight sure is a whole lot easier than losing it. We’ll hit you with a more proper post next Wednesday. For now, just a few quick updates to let you know where we’re at and to find out how you are doing since two weeks ago.

Now, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-In

David Wright

Even though the whole “Gaining weight thing” was a joke, it seems that my body took me seriously. I lost two pounds the week before (when we didn’t weigh in) and gained them back this past week. So for the two week period, it’s a net break even.

I’ve been fairly busy and it seems when I get busy, I fail to plan my meals. And when I fail to plan my meals, well, I end up eating horribly, just grabbing whatever I can find regardless of it’s caloric impact. Not good, I know. I know better and NEED to set aside some time for proper meal planning if I want to continue the 22 pound weight loss I’ve had so far!

The stats: David Wright

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 250 lbs.
  • Weight 2 weeks ago: 328 lbs.
  • Weight today: 328 lbs.
  • Amount gained this week: 0 lbs.
  • Total lost since Nov. 19: 22 pounds

Tara Cain

I was clearly copying DW. Sure it was all a joke, but I did fall off the wagon a smidge. Ok a lot. Ok I totally gorged. Happy now?

Well, I’ve spent the week feeling AWFUL. If ever there was a good reason to climb back on board and get with the programme, the way I am feeling today is it.

I feel bloated, I feel unwell, I feel headachey. I feel on the edge.
Boy do I need to pull myself together.
As David said, gaining weight is so much easier, but by George you don’t feel half as alive.

The stats:

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 140 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 162 lbs.
  • Weight today: 164lbs
  • Amount lost this week: +2lb

Now it’s your turn. Share your success (or setback) story with us.
