Dave Fowler’s Daily Update Number 6
In Daily Update number 5 Avlor and I were wondering (in the Friday Comments), whether there was a link between my recent lack of sleep, my desire to eat sweet things and overeating?

Having only six hours sleep and therefore being awake an extra two hours each day means I’m more fatigued for sure, but I wonder if it’s more to do with the timing of my eating plan. I set my eating plan at a time when I was waking around 7am, but now I’m waking at 4am I want to eat breakfast at around 5am two hours earlier than normal.
Come 10 am when I would usually have a snack, I’m actually ready for my lunch and my belly is telling me that a snack is not good enough, so I end up eating sweets to satisfy my desire for energy dense foods. It’s a bad move.
I’ll review my eating plan again over the weekend and see if I can adjust what I’m doing.
The exercise is going well and I’m not too sore now. I’ve managed to get in a couple of extra long extra brisk walks with the dogs while my wife has had a few days off work. Not having to take the kids with me means the walks are more vigorous.
Sunday 8th December 2008
A day without any structured exercise has meant that I’ve been better able to control my eating.
I haven’t had my body telling me it’s worked hard and therefore wants to be fed more.
I also managed seven hours of sleep last night and that had to help.
I’m looking forward to my Monday morning run, but I know it’s going to be freezing.
Monday 9th December 2008
It wasn’t as cold as I feared it would be when I set foot outside my door, but it was cold enough.
It was tough to get going this morning and it was tough to keep going.
I suspect it will be the same every morning now that Winter is starting to bite.
Running at 4am has to be amongst the most ridiculous ideas I’ve ever had. But the honest truth is, if I left it until later in the day it probably wouldn’t get done.
So yes, it’s tough but it would be tough no matter what time of day I did it. Might as well be first thing when I haven’t had enough time to talk my way out of it.
My biggest challenge today is to repeat yesterday’s performance with my eating plan, i.e. stick to it.
After yesterday’s success in that department I believe I can do it again today.
This has been a good start to the week.
Have a great week yourselves!

Running at 4 AM – if that’s the time you’ll actually do it – it’s not ridiculous at all, I contend Dave. It may “appear” ridiculous to others, you may even think it’s ridiculous that you’re going out in the middle of the night (almost) to run. If that’s when it will get done, though, that’s when you’ve got to do it. You do what works for you…
Here’s to a great week ahead for all of you!

Lance, the first comment of the day has made my day!
It’s very odd running at 4am (usually around 4.15 by the time I get outside) and it does still feel like night time rather than dawn or even pre-dawn (if there is such a thing as pre-dawn).
As you say, it gets it done. I start the day with a success and it carries me through.
Thanks for cheering me on.

Way to go Dave. Perfect use of your time. If you are waking up early get to it. I love being the only one on the road in the mornings. I also prefer a morning work out to an evening or lunch time one. It does though push my appetite into overdrive.
Personally this weekend I hit a wall where all I wanted to do was eat, sleep and sit on the couch.
Good luck this week.

DC Urban Dad, I’m hoping my appetite calms the hell down soon. It’s driving me nutty. Still, it’s only doing it’s job I suppose.
The early hours are very peaceful and out on the road I’m left to my own thoughts and when I can;t handle my own thoughts I listen to some music. Either way it seems to have a meditative effect??
Ah, the wall is almost sure to appear at some stage. I’ll have to drop by and find out what you’re doing about it.
Hope you break through though!!! Keep going!

Honestly there is nothing really special. The best comment I have gotten so far is to not take it too bad. Roll with the punches.
So that’s what I am gonna do. Stay committed and just tell the wall to f-off. And if I cannot get up, I will go around.

Exercising in the morning is always the way I work best, plus, my day goes better if I exercise. In fact, I’m just the opposite of you. When I have done my structured exercise, I usually follow my eating plan.
Keep up the good work. It might be cold, but remember the warm sweat you’re producing. It’s warm you up really fast………………:)

Lisa, I’ve been caught off guard with the early rising. I wasn’t expecting this to happen.
I’ll just keep adjusting until I get it right.
The early starts probably won’t come naturally to me for a couple of months but after that it should get easier, but I’m detemined to carry on this way. It’s a great feeling to get the important stuff done first!! Getting sweaty

I’m so happy to see that you’re keeping at it, even if you’re experiencing some challenges! Respect, dude. Also; I hope you’ll figure out how to get that appetite to cooperate soon! Food is my no. 1 vice, and I hate feeling hungry! That’s when I usually just give up and eat ’till I drop… Looking forward to reading your next update!

I’ll probably do to my appetite what I do to everything else I can’t fix… beat it into submission. I’ve broken so many remote controls and mobile phones out of frustration. Oh wait, perhaps there’s a message in there somewhere. LOL. And actually I’m seeing improvement.
Thank you for geeing me along. It’s appreciated!!
