  1. Hey – no gain is good!

I’m down 2.4 lbs from last week. Still have some vacation poundage to lose – but I’m getting there! Details in comment luv.

Today I walked all over hell and creation for the biggest neighborhood rummages in our town. 3 hrs (with hills) baby! Can’t wait to see what the scale shows for that tomorrow! ;)

  2. I applaud you guys for making your weight-loss goals public. It has a way of holding you accountable. I’m in the same situation which is why I started my blog a year ago. I returned to a long-time love of mine, cycling, to help shed the poundage. Good luck in your goals.

  3. Great post, Sean!

I’m holding around the same… a couple gained last week, a couple lost this week. My body fat, which has been dropping, seems to have leveled out. It’s time to start upping the exercise (of which I’m not doing enough of).

  4. Sean – I wish I had seen the writing on the wall when I was younger and that I would have maintained the motivation and dedication that I once had. It doesn’t get easier as you get older. It only gets easier when you stick to it — but it’s always easy to slip back to bad habits.

David – I have been so tempted this week to stop at the grocery to buy a big box of ice cream — just for me. I know what you mean about being powerless, so I just drove on by, barely, without giving in. I can only imagine what my weight would have done if I had given in — and I’m NOT dieting, just limiting my snacks.

Tara – I may be going back to work for a period of time and that poses a risk to my fitness program. I’ll be “nose deep in work” and the snack machines will be a very short distance away — I’ll be just a couple of doors down from my old office which was right across from the snack machines. I may have to do an hour at the gym before work and another hour after work just to keep from slipping back — assuming that the contract is approved.

I slipped a little this week. Only made it to the gym 4 days and I gained 1.4 lbs.

However, I also made some decent progress. Details in CommentLuv.

    Started November 1, 2008 at 285.6 lbs
    Last week = 263.4 lbs.
    This week = 264.8 lbs.
    Difference = + 1.4 lbs.; -20.8 lbs since starting
Initial goal: 210 lbs.; 54.8 lbs. to go!

  5. Hey, nice to see you here Sean!

I joined the gym 9 months after baby, and now I have absolutely no excuses not to go. You see, I actually have no choice because I became a fitness instructor so if I don’t show up, a lot of people get *really, really* mad at me.

Obviously, I made that choice with a clear mind.. and it’s about turning something into a habit. Teaching as a habit, is one that will be extremely hard to break, and, the side effect is that I absolutely love the journey I take my class on week after week.

So, good for you in taking 30 days off sugar. Good luck to you.

  6. I’ve been struggling with my weight since puberty and its definitely winning the battle. My heaviest at 5 ft 2 inches has been 185.3 lbs. I am now inching around 160lbs partially due to being laid off of work in February (being depressed) and switching to a different form of birth control. I love to cook, love to eat, and love to write about food.

Like most people, diabetes and heart disease are prevalent in my family and now at 31 years of age, I’m starting to get serious about living better. The only problem is that the cake, pizza, pastas, burgers, and fries taste better than ever. Three years ago I quit smoking and at that time was at my all time thinnest of 135 pounds. I haven’t been able to get down to that weight since. But I will keep trying by eating better and exercising.

  7. Great motivational post Sean, really appreciate your candid words.
I gave up sugar for 3 weeks of Lent and boy did I learn what it does to your system. I went through headaches, moods, feeling like crapola – but none of that amounted to a whole hill of beans when you compare it to how I felt when I had sugar again after the 3 week break. Oh boy!
I think it’s a great thing to do and am going to climb right back on board with you.

  8. Enjoyed your post, Sean. Who would have thought you could make weight gain such a great, literary read!

I fell back into some of my old habits of eating sugar-filled desserts this week, and the result was no weight loss. I think the only reason there was no weight gain is because I managed to work out every day, even twice on some of the days. Seems I have no problem sticking to an insane exercise routine (kickboxing, weightlifting, spinning, plyometrics, you name it), but man am I challenged when it comes to giving up the sweets! I love, love, love them!

Sean, you mentioned knocking on 30′s door and realizing you needed to get in shape. I used to tell myself that when I hit 40, I’d finally stop eating like a kid. Well that ship has left the harbor. Based on my actions this past week, I’m starting to think it might be closer to 50!

Enough negativity. Next week, I will do better.

    Starting weight – 132
    Loss this week – 0
    Current weight – 128
Loss so far – 4 lbs.
Goal weight – 120 (but 125 is more realistic)

  9. Hi Sean, great post. David and Tara – count me back in! I have regained almost all of the weight I lost last year (20lbs) and I’m really embarrassed to admit that. I could use excuses (bad experience with ex-husband was the jump off point from the diet) but the fact is: I am a fat blob. I’ll be doing a weigh in on Wednesday…first I have to find a weighbridge to use.

  10. Hi Sean, I enjoyed reading your post. Weight gain seems to be a side effect of many happy (and not so happy) marriages. I was 55kgs when I got married and a few years down the track I’m now pushing 70kg. Eating the same as my husband was my serious downfall, along with sudden access to the tools of laziness – a car and financial means.

David and Tara – I’m with you on the snowball effect. I’ve not eaten well over Easter and a nasty virus knocked out my ability to exercise. It seemed once I started down the slippery slope it was difficult to get back up again.

I am on track and reminding myself *why* I’m doing this, is key for me. I need to be healthier for myself and for my family, we deserve better than someone who is tired and unfit, feels sorry for herself and can’t keep up.

Great post Sean! Jason and I are doing the same thing right now- getting our butts back in shape. I just signed up for a Zumba class with a friend. It’s so hard to find the time with little ones, but you are so right that we owe it to our loved ones to take care of our bodies. I have neglected mine for too long. I went from Marathon runner (40+ miles per week) pre-Gus to zero exercise post-Hollis. We went bowling on Friday and Jason and I are sore all over today…that’s a sure sign we’re out of shape! Thanks for the motivation!!!!
