The challenge
Today is Ash Wednesday. Every year I ignore it. No actually, that’s not true. Every year I fill my face with pancakes the day before and then scoff at anyone foolish enough to give something up for 40 straight days on Ash Wednesday.
This year is different. I am giving up crap.
I have tried moderating the chocolate and the biscuits and the ice cream but it just doesn’t work. Once I have one I want another. Once I’ve had another I’m not happy until they have all gone.
If I didn’t open the packet in the first place I would be fine, but once that seal is broken I am done for.
So, I am issuing you all a challenge. Can you give up refined sugar for 40 days?
It’s not long really. I mean, what’s 40 days out of 365?
I gave up chocolate once and didn’t eat a jot for 2 weeks and when I tried it at the end of this period I felt really sick.
I am hoping for this same effect with sugar. That and I’d like to give my internal organs a fighting chance by giving them a bit of a clear out.
So for me that means no biscuits, no cake, no toffee popcorn, no Cola (I can see DW and Turf Dad shaking their heads now!) and no pinching chocolate from the children’s treat tins.
I know it’s going to be really tough but somehow having a defined period of time to do it will help – plus I’ve got all you to answer to!
Anyone care to join me – or give up something else for your Blog To Fit buddies?
Now, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-In
Tara Cain
The stats:
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
- Goal weight: 140 lbs.
- Weight last week: 164 lbs.
- Weight today: 164lbs
- Amount lost this week: 0lb
David Wright
Well, with all the Valentine’s Day candy safely out of the house (and by out of the house, I mean eaten), I was able to return to a normal eating habit this week. I even ate a few vegetables! I also lost two pounds – and without the help of laxative-like chocolates, thank you.
One of the hard parts about losing weight for me is to avoid the late night snacking I am prone to doing. It’s tough, but most nights, I’m good.
What I haven’t been able to do though, is get off my butt this week to exercise.
I’ve been pretty busy, but when am I not? So, this week I’m going to challenge myself to walk every day for at least half an hour. Of course, the hardest part about walking most days is just getting out of the house. Once I’m out, I will likely push myself to go longer.
At least that’s the plan.
The stats: David Wright
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
- Goal weight: 250 lbs.
- Weight last week: 329 lbs.
- Weight today: 327 lbs.
- Amount lost this week: 2 lbs.
- Total lost since Nov. 19: 23 pounds

@Dave – yeah the chocolate demon got me too. :p
@Tara – Holy cow. You go girl. I’m anxious to see how your sacrifice/experiment works.

Up .2 lbs from 2 weeks ago. But considering I was up another 1.1 lbs earlier this week, I call it a win.

Sorry. The Holy Cow could be taken several ways, dear Tara. Yes it will be tough. (Much like Daisy’s experience or mine when I couldn’t eat cow’s milk or soy while I was nursing due to baby girl’s allergy.) But you can do it. I meant it as “amazing and awesome” – not “oh dear God what is she doing”.

Tsk. If I wasn’t so weak from lack of chocolate I would come over there and slap your legs DW.
Girlfight indeed.
I gave up sugar a few years ago. It was cold turkey because I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and it was very difficult for the first bit. So, I had to give up a lot of things including sugar, but it also meant portion-sized eating, reducing qty’s of carbs, and an overhaul of everything that went into my mouth. I don’t know if I would have been a great patient if I hadn’t been pregnant at the time, because as a to-be-mom, I felt that I had to do everything I could to give the unborn child his/her best chance at life.
The first few days were really hard… even my coffee had sugar! But then, I found after the first week, things got a little easier, and by 14 days, I found that there were some things that I let go of pretty quickly.
Don’t think of it as 40 days. Think of it as 1 day at a time. Good luck and we’re all behind you on this!

Judging by your Avatar VodkaMom you’ve already given up!
Just a friendly word of warning – I will be checking up on you . . .

I’m “all in” baby! But I have to finsh the drink that’s next to my laptop first.
And you have to watch some “bloke films”, they burn calories. If you watch “The Hidden” you will burn 300 calories, I promise.

I cannot believe it! I so did not expect you to be up for the challenge my friend.
So glad you are.
You finish your sinful drink, get down to business from now on . . .
I’m watching you. I’m probably not watching The Hidden which sounds far too much like a horror to me. x

The horror is going without my sinful drinks!
“The Hidden” is totally tame as far as gore and aliens and scary stuff. Its more shoot’m up car chase stuff. Don’t such a wuss!
[Reply]
Tara, you amaze me. I only tried to give up coffee for a few days and gave in on day 2 after a major headache and a nervous breakdown.
Good luck, I will for sure watch this space and join the weigh-ins as soon as I ‘breathed’ my baby out and weaned her off. Until then: bring on the cake

Hmph, here I am chomping on grapes and you talk about chocolate cake. What, you didn’t mention chocolate? See, see, I’m going mad already.

Alright, I’m in. No refined sugar. This actually won’t be too bad because I don’t have pop or anything like that to give up. And we don’t keep that kind of stuff in the house, but I do cave at work. So, no refined sugar for 40 days. We can do this!!!! Wait? Does white wine count as a refined sugar? I hope not. Oh dear.

Push-ups: Check

Giving up refined sugar: No can do!
I am going to have to pass on that one. I always find if I give up something for a period of time, I just end up binging on it the day after I get it back. Case in point – Had gestational diabetes with my 2nd child and couldn’t have anything during the last 2 months of pregnancies. I love Dairy Queen and more specifically Blizzards from DQ and couldn’t have one for 60 days. I told the Hubby – skip the flowers, card, balloons at the hospital and bring me an XL blizzard. AND yippee – less than 6 hours after giving birth I was feasting on an XL blizzard!!!
Wish you all good luck though!

If you keep up with the push ups and sit ups and running then I’ll let you off the hook!

I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and if that stops working then I do some kind of drastic sacrificing, but then, we don’t really have too much refined sugar now as it it. I don’t drink cola. I think my biggest problem right now is eating too much at mealtime. My only snack is a cup of trail-mix (nuts and M&Ms — I know, chocolate and refined sugar), but I probably have that snack too often.
Made it to the gym 6 days, gained a pound.

I am still up in weight, but I think my face is not so puffy. I had to give up my dietitian and my monthly trainer….just no work coming in the office right now…hoping that will change soon.
I wrote a whole post about what I am giving up on Monday 2/24/09 including the watching the news – every year for Lent I fast…all 40 days…this time I am going to fast on Potassium broth – green bean turkey soup, one cup of fresh apple juice, grapefruit and soy smoothies. I am going to substitute 2 Tbs lemon juice in hot water for the apple cider vinegar…and I will be back swimming tomorrow so back to the whole exercise routine (no weight lifting)
I must get rid of this pain around my middle…and get all systems working to maximum…that means still losing 100 pounds to be 15 pounds underweight and conquer this disease…
I try to only eat whole sugars as in whole fruit….I am basically down to water to drink..one or two herbal teas….I need to keep writing to distract myself…I wish I did not have to cook for my honey…that is the hard part.
I am very angry with my body….attempting to release that anger…

Tell Tom you’ll only cook him food you don’t like.
Even though you don’t have the trainer, you can probably stick to the routine you had when you were able to go. I made note of the exercises my trainer gave me in 2006 when I had to stop going and attempted to keep at it. Of course, without someone holding me to the task, I stopped doing the exercises.
I’m with you on giving up the news. I can’t quite break myself of it – you know, just in case I get another newspaper job – but I would like to disconnect from it for a bit.

Hi all – I promised myself I’d join you all in in January. Better late than never.
Me – Mum of 2, desk job and tons of baby weight to lose.
Start weight: 184lbs
Goal weight: 140 lbs
40 in November – that’s 37 weeks away and so much work to do to make sure that I don’t feel a frumpy forty (am calling it my twenty8twelve birthday at the moment….).
Hmmmm – Lent. I think I should give up finishing up the leftoevers on my kid’s plates (yes even the fish fingers – sigh)
Thanks everyone – I love your site

Hey that’s fabulous Mrs P. A very warm welcome – there are no time constraints here.
That description you’ve given of yourself (mum of two, desk job etc) that was so me too. I could actually feel my bum expanding over the office chair if I sat there too long!
And as for giving up finishing off the children’s left overs, I think that’s a mightly fine idea – you’ll probably save half your daily calories right there (or is that just greedy old me?)
Anyway it’s great to have you here. x

Oh Oh the truth is out…I right now only cook Tom food I don’t care for or can not eat!
I just make him a casserole, Gluten Free Bread, and something for dinners only on Sundays…he just warms everything up….during the week. He eats like 2 dinners a day basically.
I eat 8 snacks a day…
Liver, pancreas, and stomach are still swollen and inflamed….I think swimming, and walking are it for a while…I can not lift or twist at all…it is as though I have an inner tube around my diaphragm…
The problem with not going to the gym together is that we then almost have 0 time together…
Did you catch my post today on http://www.bikingarchitect.com ? I put a link to a neat set of biking folks on it….I think the women would like Lance Armstrong’s picture as well as Dave Fowler’s ….no lie!

@Suzanne – given up wine?!!!! For Lent?! Helllooooo … if I recall my Bible stories, Jesus turned water into wine. Giving up wine. Unacceptable. Now pardon me, while I settle in with a nice glass … or two … or three.
