Wednesday Weigh In Jan. 21, 2009
It’s okay ladies, science says it’s not your fault.
According to this article in the Washington Post, women have a harder time than men in saying no to their favorite foods.
An excerpt from the article:
Then, after they fasted for 20 hours, the researchers presented them with their favorite foods; the dishes were even warmed up, if appropriate, to make them more tempting. The men and women were allowed to smell and taste the food but not eat it. Then, in an experiment, they were told to try to inhibit their desire to eat the food.
And that was the last time anyone saw the researchers alive.
Seriously though, according to the research, women have a more difficult time controlling their hunger.
The researchers found that certain areas of the brain became more active in both the men and women when they were tempted with food. The brain areas that lit up control emotions such as motivation.
Also, both men and women succeeded in making themselves feel less hungry by inhibiting their desire to eat the food. But the brain scans suggested that the women’s brains were still acting as if they were hungry.
In other words, the women may have thought they were less hungry, but their brains didn’t seem to be entirely on board.
What’s going on? Hormones could play a factor in women, Wang said, because they need to eat more when they’re pregnant.
The research could help scientists understand why some people can’t resist certain kinds of high-calorie food, Wang said. “Some people cannot inhibit themselves, and we need to help those people.”
So how do we develop self control?
While we can’t control our brains completely, we have to learn to inhibit ourselves. Easier said than done, I know.
For those of you who have established a strong sense of self control when it comes to your diet, we’d love to hear what works for you.
Well, it’s that time again, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-in. Let’s see how our BlogToFitters did.
Tara Cain
I have no self control! I seriously don’t. I have this raging argument in my head every time I want something I know I shouldn’t have. I wish I could just walk away and leave it and stop trying to convince myself that I deserve it/can get away with it/must have it or I will curl up and die.
The exercise side of things has been great this week. I have walked every other day (sometimes pushing daughter in her pushchair which is bloody tough up those hills!) and I have managed to hit or exceed 10,000 steps on the pedometer.
But, just like Dave F has said previously, now I’ve stepped up the exercise I find my hunger steps up too and i need to bring it into check.
Still, 1lb off is 1lb off, so I must be doing something right.
The stats: Tara Cain
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
- Goal weight: 140 lbs.
- Weight last week: 164 lbs.
- Weight today: 163lbs
- Amount lost this week: 1 lb
David Fowler
This has been a much better week for me and for my efforts to shed the excess. Although I haven’t done any kind of exercise other than walking, I’ve been active and very busy. I’ve done much more dog walking in the last week and that really helps. It’s proper walking – none of this mincing about with a stick in my ass malarkey. Proper full on marching stuff! Invigorating!
I’ve struggled to get my eating under control recently but I’ve turned the corner and I feel back in control. A one pound loss might not seem too amazing but it’s a massive breakthrough for me after the last month of failing. I’m reveling in my mini success!!
The stats: David Fowler
Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 200 lbs.
Goal weight 173 lbs.
Format: Start / Last Week / This Week
- Weight: 200 / 199 / 198
- Amount lost this week: 1 lb
- Hips: 40 / 39.75 / 39.75
- Waist: 38.5 / 38.5 / 38.25
- Belly: 40.25 / 40.25 / 40
- Chest: 41.5 / 41 / 41
(Weight is in lbs and measurements in inches)
David Wright
This is my best week since starting.
I lost six pounds!
Some of it is because I’ve been sick as a dog on and off the past few weeks. But some of it is because I’ve been eating less. And also eating better.
I’ve cut down on snacking and am eating more frequent, but smaller meals throughout the day. I find when I do this, even if I’m not hungry, it prevents the late night binges which have been a staple of my routine. Once my cold subsides, I’m going to get back on the road and add to this success.
The stats: David Wright
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
- Goal weight: 250 lbs.
- Weight last week: 345 lbs.
- Weight today: 339 lbs.
- Amount lost this week: 6 lbs.
- Total lost since Nov. 19: 11 pounds

Wow wee DW, that is just brilliant!
Really, it has inspired me to march on and, well, let’s be honest here, I’m really really competative and I can’t have you streaking ahead.
High fives to you my friend!

£1.52 is that all Dave is worth? So how much does that leave for me?
Dave, I’m thrilled for you. You hinted that you’d done well but I thought, 3 or maybe 4 lbs, but 6 lbs is incredible. Well done my friend, that’s a great achievement.

I feel bad for the Lion. I understand his concern.
The trend with the measurements is impressive and the running is going well.
Brilliant job Panther!

Good job, everyone! I did not go to an official weigh-in last Saturday (seriously we had mind-numbing windchills in the -40F range) and I’ll be out of town for this weekend’s as well. But I know I’m down at least 2 pounds. So we’ll wait and see what the WeightWatchers scale says. Which I’ve come to learn registers 2 pounds higher than my own. I have walked 3x for 20 – 30 minutes outside before my nose froze off. Now today we are supposed to have a high of 34F, so it may be balmy enough to be out more. Congratulations to all on an awesome week of progress!

2lbs down is a great result even if it’s not official. I’malso impressed that you braved the elements to get outside.

Gained a tiny bit – but am not worried. The bloat weight will be gone soon. Details in the CommentLuv link.
Holy cow Dave W – that’s amazing! Panther your measurements are showing the change. Keep it up! Good Job everyone!

Nice work everyone! Dave Wright, that is fantastic!!! Congratulations.
I’ve hit something of a plateau. Most of it because I’ve just lost my drive some how. I’ve stuck with my general eating plan but exercise has been somewhat tossed by the way side and I need to get back too it.
This week I stayed the same – no loss or gain. Holding steady at 276. It’s been the same story for 3 weeks.

Thanks, Jen.
In the past, when I’ve hit plateaus, I’ve found the best way to spark some fire is to get moving. And by moving, I mean walking. Walking is great. For me, the hardest part has been forcing myself to carve out some time to lace up and hit the streets. But once I’m out there, it’s great.
Added bonus, walking ALWAYS gives me creative energy. The fresh air and change of pace always inspires some story, comic or blog idea.
Good luck.

Thanks Dave. You are right. I do need to get moving and as you said making the time is the hardest part and I like my me time more than I care to admit. That creative energy you speak of is likely to pull me over the edge – now if I can only figure out how to draw on the tread mill.

Jen, being stuck for three weeks is dispiriting. I donlt know about your own experiences but I often found I would plateau for a few weeks and the my weight wold start to drop again.
As you say maybe the exercise will kickstart it again for you. Here’s hoping
Anyway, cling to the fact you havenlt gained. It means you’re eating at maintenance, i.e. not overeating!

I’m planning on doing not only watching weight as in pounds, but also measuring my percentage of body fat and lean muscle mass. We’ll see how it goes!

Body fat percentage is a good way to go. I never quite got nto the idea because I didn’t have the patience for using the calliper things and measuring 342 different points on my body. I’m more into guessing body fat percentage which is totally scientifically valid.

Great job David!
Unfortunately I had no weight change this week. Although I swear my belly is smaller. So I decided to start tracking my measurements as well.
Tara, I can really relate to your comments about will power. One thing I really paid attention to the last few weeks and have not yet mastered is rewarding myself with treats. I have also noticed how bad I feel after having some of them, physically. Dave, I can think of the most interesting projects, blogs etc while walking.

I’ve tried the reward thing too WHM, so I only ‘allow’ myself a treat if I’ve ‘earned’ it.
And while I haven’t quite mastered it either (I’ve run up the stairs twice, now I can have a treat!) I do find myself questioning my choices which can only be a good thing.
I think the trick is to keep at it and it will eventually come.

David Fowler Reply:

I like measurements better than weight. I think it gives a better picture of progress as Panthers stats illustrate.
I too find it difficult to allow myself to have treats. For me it kind of makes them forbidden and that’s just like a red rag to a bull.

Congratulations on all the weight lost and steps taken by the Administrator blog group – and Dave 6 pounds is nothing to sneeze at!
I am just back to walking and hope I can get up for swimming tomorrow. I finally slept 9 hours pain free last night – could not roll over yet, but I surely needed the sleep.
Walking and swimming is where I write my blog.
I have been eating little tiny meals to cope with all the pain, but taking so many medications this last week, I am bloated and puffy and look pregnant. The chiropractor apologized for the recovery taking so long….it just does, I am so happy my own team of doctors are all back and I will start weaning myself off these medications for heart/stroke relief which I am not having!…
I did not have the heart to weigh myself….and I could not get to the dietitians or PT because they would not let me drive… chiropractor said I was down 6 pounds since October so I am holding on to that.
I am sure I have 5 pounds of water weight in my face …aargh
It is not hard to stay motivated if you are fighting to stay pain free and functional every minute of the day….boy I sure do miss the endorphin high from exercise…
Right side is pain free….left side is painful – torn ligament or tendon holding stomach in place (stomach feels like a mushy marshmellow with a knife stuck it in) and bruised ribs….
wrote about it in my post today…

Well, I went to be weighed by my surgery’s practice nurse and – ta daa – I’ve lost 2 kilos! That’s a whole pound in real money! Admittedly I’m only weighed once a fortnight but at least that’s something to hold on to. Also – and I’ve got a big grin on my face as i’m typing this – I got into my first pair of size 10 jeans!!! They were donated to me by a formerly skinny friend who has just had a baby, and they are “shudder” bleachwash instead of my usual stonewash, but what the heck! That’s what clothes dye was invented for!!! Woo hoo!

I’m confused about the conversion though?? Aren’t there 2.2lbs to the kilo? Or am I totally misreadintg what you’ve written?
My equivalent to the size 10 jeans would be 32inch waist. It’s ashame I’m never going back there again. I think the best I could hope for is a 34 inch waist.

Now that most everyone has done well — well, I’ve slipped back a little. Worked out twice in the last week and gained a pound. Under the weather a bit this last week and too much “comfort” snacking — though it was healthy snacking. (more in my blog post — click on commentluv link)

DW that is absolutely AWESOME! (and, not being American, I reserve my use of that word, for only very special ocassions!
Tara and Dave F – you’re all doing so well. It’s great. Really great.
I didn’t do so well this week. Nothing lost, but nothing gained. But more ashamedly, nothing exercised. I barely even lifted the remote control! The Wii activity fell off in the last week as we’ve just had other boring stuff to do of an evening. I think that is why the pounds have stayed firmly clinging to my hips. That and the huge slice of New York cheesecake smothered in Ambrosia custard I had at the weekend.
I know, my head hangs in shame.
However, I’m sticking to my limit-the-cookies part of my diet and have done well resisting those on an hourly basis and now save the rare cookie crunching for an after dinner treat. And only if I’ve been a good girl that day and not spent a minute on the naughty step!
So, my stats this week:
Starting weight: 125lbs (8 stone 9lbs)
Goal weight: 112lbs (8 stone – pre-babies weight)
Weight last week: As reported, I was 8 stone 7lbs.
Weight this week: 8 stone 7lbs.
Weight lost: 0lbs.
Exercise: Errr none really. But, does running up and down the stairs 50 times a day, to retrieve small peoples’ never-ending list of items requested, ‘Now Mummy!’count?

Well, I was weighed again yesterday and I have some bad news and good news. The bad news is I’m still the same weight, but it was my brother’s birthday last week and we went out for a slap up meal. The good news is that I didn’t actually put any more on! Woo hoo!Even after chicken and leek pie, chunky chips, onion rings and home-made chocolate cake afterwards! Double woo hoo! I’m very pleased to say I still get in the size 10 jeans and I only have 2 lbs to go before I get to my target! I’m now rubbing it in my 15 year old son’s face that my waist is smaller than his – he’s nearly 6 feet tall with size 9 feet and wears 34″ trousers!
