Welcome to Blog To Fit

We're David Wright and Tara Cain, two bloggers who have come together to write about our attempts to lose weight. We're like a team of super heroes, minus the cool costumes, and well, super powers of any kind, except the ability to gain weight by simply being NEAR food.

Wednesday Weigh In Jan. 28, 2009

When does a routine become a rut?

We find comfort in routines. Comfort in doing things the same way, eating the same things, going to the same places and being with the same people. Routines can be a good. However, when you get sick of doing the same things and getting the same results, you’re not in a routine – you’re in a rut. How do you intend to get out?

Recently, I read a story which got me thinking about my own routines. It’s not the first time I’ve thought about such things, of course, but sometimes we need a gentle nudge  – a reminder of what we ought to be doing.

For me, getting healthy is about more than eating better and exercising. It involves a change of nearly everything.

So, I’m making an effort towards changing the routines which have led to my unhealthy lifestyle. I’ll detail some of the changes in my Monday update next week. Meanwhile, a question – are you in a rut?

Well, it’s that time again, for the weekly Wednesday Weigh-in. Let’s see how our BlogToFitters did.

Tara Cain

Gah. No loss for me this week.
I have found myself in a bit of a rut. I’m in the middle of trying to start up a business from home (so I can keep taking my babies to school every morning) and it’s a long, hard slog.
I don’t mind the long, had slog it’s just I get so immersed into whatever I am doing I end up rushing to eat lunch and it’s usually something I can put together in minutes. And that isn’t always a healthy option.

On top of that my exercise has reduced. I have been walking every day (some days with a pushchair. Up hills). But this week I have made every excuse possible not to go.

Still, no gain, so I suppose that’s a good thing considering I’ve been sat on my ass all the live long day!

The stats: Tara Cain

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 140 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 163 lbs.
  • Weight today: 163lbs
  • Amount lost this week: 0 lb

David Fowler

What a great week! I’ve lost 3lbs.

I’ve also climbed back on the exercise wagon. My cold is still lingering but I got tired of waiting for a full recovery. I’ve still got a sore throat but I put on my running shoes and hit the road Jack.

I’ve managed to get in two 1.5 mile runs. The first was tough, but the second was much easier.

Yesterday I started the 100 Push Up Challenge and I think I’m going to enjoy it!!

It’s odd that my measurements haven’t changed though. Ah, who cares! I’m back on the wagon! :D

The stats: David Fowler

Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 200 lbs.
Goal weight 173 lbs.

Format: Start / Last Week / This Week

  • Weight: 200 / 198 / 195
  • Amount lost this week: 3 lbs
  • Hips: 40 / 39.75 / 39.75
  • Waist: 38.5 / 38.25 / 38.25
  • Belly: 40.25 / 40 / 40
  • Chest: 41.5 / 41 / 41

(Weight is in lbs and measurements in inches)

David Wright

Woohoo! I’m on a roll, baby! Second week in a row with a significant weight loss. Last week was six pounds, this week, five. Some of it is thanks to the cold I had (and the medicine I was on) but some of it was from eating better.

None of it, I’m afraid was from exercise this week.

The stats: David Wright

  • Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
  • Goal weight: 250 lbs.
  • Weight last week: 339 lbs.
  • Weight today: 334 lbs.
  • Amount lost this week: 5 lbs.
  • Total lost since Nov. 19: 16 pounds

  1. Congrats to all! Great progress! Tara, don’t beat yourself up – it is way harder for women to lose and you’re spinning a lot of plates – not just the ones you eat from. I’ve not got any stats because I was traveling over the weekend. I’m afraid I’m in a plateau, but there is still time before this weekend’s weigh-in! Hope and pray!

And don’t worry about Tara. She’s already agreed that if she loses, she will be posting pictures of herself in her bra from a few weeks ago. THAT should be incentive to win this thing!

  2. Tara, I simply maintained this week too, due to the change in routine/stress of mom being in the hospital. See today’s post for further details. But I’m okay with maintenance in situations like this.

Boyz!!!! BIG WOOT to both of you!!!

Congratulations to all for a good week of sustaining and/or weight loss!

I started to log my food into Fitday.com. I’ve used it over the years and I think it really helps keep track of how many calories I am putting into my body and of those calories what are good, nutritious vs empty calories. I am working on “moderation” and not restricting anything from my overall diet. However, my goal is to eat cleaner and better than I have been. I’ve no weight loss to report as I’ve really just began to take this seriously.

    Welcome LISA!
Can you put how much you want to lose when you post next week? You don’t have to put your weight now. Some people simply put Goal: Lose 40 pounds, then update each week to say how many pounds they lost or gained.

Glad to see you here. Good luck!

DW, I want to lose 80lbs by next week. ;)

Seriously though I haven’t given it much thought yet. 2 would be good for starters.

    Hi Lisa,

Fitday is good. I’ve sen that plenty of people use it.

The last time I looked it was based heavily on US brands and measures. I struggled to use it from a UK perspective.

“80 lbs by next week” lol

Congratulations Daves!!! That’s excellent. Tara, I’m with you. Total rut.

Since Fowler asked, I’m happy to oblige. I’ve been eating poorly and not exercising. That combination leads straight to weight gain. I don’t own a scale, but I’m definitely heavier than I used to and my pants are not as comfy. Totally my fault, and I need to be more mindful.

You’re working too hard Sean!! But I totally understand why.

Thanks for posting your stuff up. :D

Super job Daves! (100 push up challenge? Give me sit-ups over push-ups any day, please!)

Tara, you’ll get back at it -we know you. Setting up a business is hard. Something that may help (and yes this takes a bit of time) – is to make a plan for lunches like many people do for the evening meals, and pack a lunch. I’ve been doing this the last month and it’s helping me and my boy get much better lunches. Then I know what I need to have on hand and prepped. Maki has a great planner that can be used for any type of lunch. http://justbento.com/handbook/downloads/weekly-bento-planner Hope that is of some help.

I goofed and posted another post before did the comment and linkLuv here. So my update is here today. Down 1.4 lbs.

Congrats to all of those who are sticking with this, whether you are losing weight or not.

I really wish that I had gotten into a strong habit of fitness and exercise when I was in my 20s or 30s or even that I would have stuck with what I was doing in my forties, even though I would have had to battle back from a herniated disk.

It is so much harder to do when you have years and years of not being vigilant about weight and fitness, especially with spending hours a day at the computer, both at work and then again at home.

For the second week in a row, I’ve gained back a pound, but I’m doing much better, health wise. For more, click on the commentluv link below.

I’m sure we all wish we’d worked out earlier in life. However, I’m just as sure that if we did nothing now, then 10 or 20 years from now, we’d be saying, “I wish I worked out in 2009, when…”

All we have is now to make up for the transgressions of then.

Good luck, Mike and thank you.

Mike, what you say here makes me all the more determined to spend my forties in good physical condition – it would be a great way to spend the decade and a great way to start a new one. :)

This was a strange week for me, no rut at all and I think I found a new friend which is nice after being isolated for so long….a real person. We went to a movie “Last Chance Harvey” which was very good and not silly. It opened us up to talk about our lives and where we were at right now. This was pure joy We both don’t eat at the movies, that was nice too.
I had a shot of Novocaine into a muscle in my back – they can not do that with the front muscle problem – working at trying to find some way for me to get sleep. My Doctor is back from sabbatical and India, and she thought the acid reflux, heart problem was a waste of my time too….and she is working at getting my health ins. to get me in for a therapeutic massage
Sleep is such a good healing force, Dr. and Chiropractor are both focused on alleviating pain so I can sleep – no luck so far. All medications except water pill dropped – thank goodness. Diagnosis: torn muscle off sternum, pulled and tight muscles and compensation muscle pain.

Up 11 pounds yesterday…even though I am walking 3 miles rain, snow or sunshine and weightlifting dog pooh to the pooh station daily. (see my latest 2 posts!)

Internet service provider due any minute…thank goodness…shooting pains across my abdomen make it hard to sit.
Had a first…wrote a post for http://www.bikingarchitect.com yesterday and had 25 views within 30 minutes of posting…and got 11 new followers on Twitter – did something right and it was a heady experience!

Congrats! to the fellows this week and Tara you do have so many “plates” to work on, I think you are amazing for maintaining.

The diagnosis of the muscle problem made me thing ouch and of course I then realised that ‘ouch’ is probably a massive understatement.

Did I read that right? Are you up eleven pounds or is that one point one pounds?

I know you’re working through the pain but I’d like to encourage you to keep at it!!! :D

I am up 11 pounds! you read that correctly – back to walking 3 miles to 4 miles everyday and hope to be back to swimming next week…I think 5 pounds of it is swelling in my face and most of the rest is swelling around the torn muscle spot in my diaphragm area…It adds so much pressure. No weight lifting or yoga for about 6 weeks…
I am still on soft foods as the swelling is pressing on my stomach area…
This is awful but I am still working on it.. a bit jealous everyone in my book group has lost over 6 pounds since New Year’s Day…Ah me – this kind of the way it goes for me?

Very cool – first time here and nice to see so many familiar names!

I’ve likely got a gazillion comments, but I’ll leave it at only a few for now:

    1) I think measurements and emotional feel (on scale of 1-10 where 10 means you FEEL fabulous) are more important than actual weight. Actual weight can be impacted by something as simple as – I went to the bathroom, or I drank some water, or I’m bloated.
    2) I can certainly appreciate both ‘manly’ push-ups, and sit-ups/crunches, however, I’ll add another – full squats (hands/arms go straight down and touch the floor while legs/knees bend and then back up) – these are a killer and shows not only heart/lung capacity, but also strength. It’s a test based on time (how many can you do in x time) and how long can you go for.

Squats were my LEAST favorite part of working out when I had a personal trainer in 2006. Ouch, I’m in pain just thinking about it.
