Wednesday Weigh In Number Three
Welcome to the first weigh in of December! With the holidays looming and more importantly, holiday treats waiting around every corner, BlogToFitters have their work in store for them this month! How did American David Wright handle Thanksgiving? How are Brits, Tara Cain and David Fowler making out with their plans? Read on, dear reader and find out who lost weight.
Tara Cain
A wise chap once said: “you know when you’ve reached middle age when your weightlifting consists merely of standing up.”
And that’s exactly how I have felt about dragging my body back into a fitness regime after years of neglect and laziness.
It is SO easy to slip into an ‘I’d rather sit in front of the telly with a cup of tea because the kids/work/life has worn me down’ routine and before you know it your body is spreading across that sofa seat and you’re boring a butt hole into the fabric just like Homer Simpson.
I used to love exercise. I used to LOVE exercise. But finding that motivation again is hard.
So this week I have started slowly with some walking (and I know I keep banging on about it, but it was with a pushchair/stroller AND there were hills involved, so it was kinda tough).
I haven’t stuck with The Plan as much as I would have liked (although I have still be downing that water at an alarming rate) but it has been on my mind most of the time, which is a big improvement from when I normally just shovel in whatever is lying around without even giving it a second thought.
And so, once again, the moment of truth.
The stats: Tara Cain
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
- Goal weight: 140 lbs.
- Weight last week: 166 lbs.
- Weight today: 166 lbs
- Amount lost this week: 0 lbs.
Harumph! Lost nothing.
AND I had a big wee like DF suggests. AND I weighed myself in the nude (it’s evening and I figure you always weight more in the evening).
Well I suppose it’s better than gaining, so I’m remaining positive and will be picking up my exercise – don’t want that Homer butt creeping on.
Oh and by the way, the wise chap with the quote was Bob Hope.
David Fowler
What a week! My return to exercise has seen my appetite increase and it’s been tough to stick to the portion size I’ve set or myself. On the whole I’ve managed quite well and have much to feel pleased about. The perfectionist in me is trying to get his voice heard and announce every failure loudly but I’m muffling his cries in favour of celebrating the successes.
I’m not totally ignoring the perfectionist because there’s something I can learn from his voice, but at only three weeks in I can’t allow the super critical side of my nature to derail my progress by telling me how crap I am. I keep reminding myself I’m building a lifestyle not rushing into a fad diet.
So on the positive side… I haven’t felt bloated or lethargic. I’ve been close to sticking to my eating plan. My jeans don’t feel quite as tight as they did last week, despite the fact my measurements haven’t changed. And… I’ve started exercising again!
All in all, I’m very pleased.
Just the stats: David Fowler
Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 200 lbs.
Goal weight 173 lbs.
Format: Start / Last Week / This Week
- Weight: 200 / 198 / 197
- Amount lost this week: 1 lb.
- Hips: 40 / 39.75 / 39.75
- Waist: 38.5 / 38.5 / 38.5
- Belly: 40.25 / 40 / 40
- Chest: 41.5 / 41.25 / 41.25
(Weight is in lbs and measurements in inches)
David Wright
It wasn’t just Thanksgiving that was tough, but the days surrounding it as well. And it wasn’t only tempting food which threw a monkey wrench into my fitness plans.
With the holidays come all the inevitable schedule changes to any sort of normal routine. Without proper planning, exercise is the first thing to go. As was the case last week.
The stats: David Wright
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
- Goal weight: 250 lbs.
- Weight last week: 349 lbs.
- Weight today: 348 lbs.
- Amount lost this week: 1 lb.
Despite this, and despite a few indulgences on Thanksgiving, I managed to lose one pound. Hardly the win I was looking for, but hardly a loss. This week also provided a bit of incentive for the weeks ahead and will help me plan for the hectic holiday season.

I’ll stick with the brevity of my first weigh-in comment:
Guess I’ll go first, again
Weight 4 weeks ago when I got started: 285.6
Weight today: 278.2 lbs
Height: 6′ 3″
Goal: 200 lbs or less — no specific time duration
Rest of the body measurement: still too big!
Good luck everyone!

Mike, you did it. You got back to the plan after your imposed lay-off. Glad to hear you’re feeling better.
I tried to leave a comment at your place but I kept getting an error message.

Dave, thanks for identifying the error. I had added the title after posting, which broke the link to the post. Went back in and edited the permalink to the post and — presto! — it’s fixed.

Don’t underestimate what you have done for yourself – that’s really good going for 4 weeks and in time that is going to bring those body measurements down too.

My husband is a very bad influence – ‘you have to have a chocolate with your cup of tea. Come on, just one. Look, this is your favourite’ etc etc.
Of course he’s only doing it because HE wants one and feels justified if I join in!

Good going yourself Dave!
I hear what your saying about remaining flexible. It’s life, we have to adapt. The exercise will come but it’s better IMO to get the diet sorted first and it seems ike you’ve done that. Well played Sir.
[Reply]
Dave and Dave: You lost weight, that’s the most important thing. I too find it hard when the results don’t come straight away, but we are making life plans here, so they will come.
Lets all redouble our efforts this next week and tackle Christmas head on!
[Reply]
David Fowler Reply:

Good job on maintaining!
The thing about the results is they’re often masked. It’s exactly the reason I prefer to weigh first thing in the morning. There are less variables and after I’ve done my ‘ablutions’ I feel I’m most likely to get as near to a consistent reading as is possible.
Anyway – It’ a ‘horses wee’ – You must have seen a horse wee?
[Reply]
Tara Cain Reply:
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:03 am
Oh shoot, is that what I did wrong? A horses wee you say.
I’ll remember that next time – I could have lost at least another 2lb if I’d done one of those I’m guessing
[Reply]
Just like my blog twin I stayed the same this week which wasn’t too bad considering I did diddly-squat on the activity front! (Diddly squats are worse than normal squats by the way – they really make your thighs hurt!)
But I still feel positive as the 2lb of muffin hasn’t gone back on and I will be carrying on making small changes as I’m in the “long term good habits” zone.
With Christmas and all it’s social eating/drinking and Other Half’s birthday celebration coming up soon, my plan is to still enjoy it but a little less than I would of before and get in as much activity as possible. Well done everyone for carrying on and for the losses and no gainers! It’s a tough time of year to make healthy changes but think how smug we’ll feel come January when we won’t be the bloaters we would have been!

Ooo Diddly Squats! I can’t do those either. You need a really good aim and if you don’t do it right you can cause yourself an injury. *wince*
Staying the same is positively good in this context so I see no reason for concern and as you say – you’re in the zone!
LMAO @ bloaters – You really do have the very best vocab ever!

ThatGirl you absolutely crack me up. Diddly squats! I love it. I am so pinching that line and using it to impress somewhere else.
And good for you with the ‘how smug will be feel come January when we won’t be the bloters we would have been’ line. That has actually made me more determined to get through Christmas without falling into a binge abyss of mince pies and trifle.
[Reply]
@Tara – hey, chickie, you implemented yet more healthy changes this week. Dropping the weight will come. And I hear you about Hubby. The Lion likes his evening glass of wine, or 2, or 3 (hey, he’s French) and he offers me some, and well, I say yes. Sigh.
@David F – re: My return to exercise has seen my appetite increase and it’s been tough to stick to the portion size I’ve set or myself. This is has been an awful challenge for me. I hae been to the gym faithfully for over 2 weeks now, but I come back to work and I’m STARVING. And I haven’t adjusted the food in my lunch yet, so I end up at the Tuck Shop which is the Pit of Caloric Evil. End result, I gained back a pound. Grrr!
@David W – hey, you should be aiming for 1 pound per week. It’s all good.
@Mike G – Rock on! You are doing great, and you were sick and everything.
@ThatGirl – bloaters *chuckle* Now if I could only do something about that once per month bloating. Oh, sorry guys. Perhaps that was too much information.

Panther, it’s odd, but I remember on my previous attempt(s) that my weight would cycle around a three pounds margin for a week before dropping and then cycling again. I haven’t got any proof of this other than my own experiences but it happened too often to be random. Like you, I could do enough exercise, stick to my eating plan and still gain weight. Bizarre.
Good luck next week!

My hubby doesn’t offer me things. He’ll just snack on ice cream in front of me after the kiddos go to bed. (He’s not being a snob. His metabolism can handle it and he’s hungry then. My metabolism can’t – it smells ice cream and I start to gain.)

Okay, here’s me: I didn’t weigh in at WeightWatchers on Saturday because it was the holiday weekend and I was out of town. Eating. At. My. Friend. Judy’s. I came back to what looked like a 2 lb net gain. Thanksgiving is all about eating. So, I got back with the points counting and it looks like I’m down by 2, so net/net. I’m hoping for an additional pound or so by Saturday’s weigh-in.

Well done all you guys who are making changes to your lifestyle. it is really so great to read how many people are part of BlogToFit and how much support is given and received over here.
I made a big step this week (got on the scales) and some big mistakes (ate McDonalds for dinner last night, ‘ouch!’ said my hips as another 5lbs of pure fast-food fat hit them.)
But, getting on the scales has been OK. Am not quite as beyond my goal weight as I thought, but am also a bit shocked at how many lbs have crept on since the summer when I last weighed myself.
So (after my big horses wee! and shaving my legs) here are the stats.
Starting weight: 125lbs (8 stone 9lbs)
Goal weight: 112lbs (8 stone – pre-babies weight)
Weight last week: N/A (didn’t have the guts to get on the scales!)
Weight this week : 125lbs
Weight lost: N/A
Cookies eaten in a week: 4 (This I am very pleased about as usually 2 or 3 a day.)
Exercise: Didn’t do so well with this as when I went to the gym, it was closed for refurbishements! (Shows I go so infrequently, that I’d missed the notices warning of impending closure.) But, I did play in the snow twice with the kids, dragging them up the sledging hill and running about, sweating in all my Thinsulate, so I figure that would have knocked some of the evil muffin top off its perch!

David Wright Reply:

I’ve been a bad girl. I have gained weight this week….gulp. I’ve put on 3.25lbs, but in my defence it was my birthday and I overindulged. (awaits the wrath of the Blog to Fit team).
I’ll go and stand in the naughty corner.
p.s. Can I also use Thanksgiving as an excuse too? All that food and drink and so on? Even though we don’t celebrate it here?

I tell you what notSupermum, I will set you a challenge.
For one week only – one week – you stick to your guns and really really make an effort.
I’ll do it with you and every time i think I’m going to waiver I’ll think of you and that I’ll be letting you down if I do. I’ll also think of Dave getting up at silly am and be thankful that I’m not having to do that.

notSupermum, I’d be tempted not to panic. The weight is sometime so misleading. You may well have put on some weight but it may not be as much as you think. Suddenly going back to eating birthday type food can lead to some water retention.
See how you go this week.

So I’m feeling a little shameful this week after losing so much last week that I gained a little. We had 2 Thanksgiving dinners and a birthday party for my son that blew the week to bits. I’m thankful I didn’t gain all 4 pounds back.
So here goes:
Starting weight: 284
Weight last week: 279.2
Weight this week: 281
Gained: 1.8 lbs *sigh*
But all grimacing aside. I’m back on the wagon and all the Thanksgiving food and cake and pizza are out of the house and I have a date with the Wii fit tonight. This little guy is calling my name.

Wow I am getting to love check in Wednesdays! I broke even this week and with San Francisco walking, thanksgiving eating, wine tasting, and desserts galore, topped off with 2 days of sitting on the train…I was well pleased with myself…
I still have a great deal of inflamation left over from the pneumonia and I think clearing that up will help my heart and body get into better balance.
The greatest reward this week for me besides getting back to my exercise routine (wow do those endorphins soar!) was that I maintained a 123/73 blood pressure for over a week without any medications…
getting all the emails read from when I was away and catching up on blog reading this week has kept me from doing the Wii Fit…hopefully by next week…
Dave W….changing routines and flexibility is a crucial step for me….wow you are doing so well….
thanks everyone for putting it out there and for the support this week…you are all great…

Are you supposed to stop your medications? I would be careful if you’re supposed to maintain medication for blood pressure. You feel great after going off of them and your blood pressure will be okay for a bit, but it will rebound and rise.
Sounds like you had a nice healthy week, though! Congrats.
