Wednesday Weigh In Number Two
by Tara Cain on November 26, 2008
in Wednesday Weigh-In
Welcome to the second installment of the Blog To Fit Wednesday Weigh-in. While last week was the first weigh-in, this is the first update on our weight loss goals.
And good thing the weigh-in is today, rather than Friday, when many of us might weigh an extra pound or two following a Thanksgiving day of pigging out on all matter of yummies while actively engaged in the sport of watching football on TV. For those of us who are watching what we eat we’ll be forced to choose: eat sensibly on Thursday or work out four times as hard on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Without further ado, here are the updates.
Tara Cain
“Inside me lives a skinny woman crying to get out. But I can usually shut the bitch up with cookies” – that’s the birthday card a good friend sent me for my birthday last Friday!
It really made me chuckle, than I thought ‘ye gads, it’s funny because it is SO me!’ The OLD me (though not old as in aged obviously).
So, this past week I think I have walked about 5 miles just going to and from the toilet.
One of my aims was to drink more water, and boy does my body know about it!
So I’ve been knocking it back like some kind of water wino for four days.
Then hubby and I went away for the weekend to a spa hotel. As a treat I had a fancy pants facial and the therapist said to me: “You are NEVER 40!”
I didn’t need to be told twice. I’ve probably broke the record for the amount of water one human can consume in the space of an hour! I am officially declaring this part of The Plan a success.
OK, I’m not sure how it’s helped with my diet, but by jove, I had the best compliment I’ve had since becoming heavy with child way back in 2002 so I’m sold.
And yes, we indulged on my 40th, but I stuck with The Plan and only gave in to one midnight mince pie. Oh and we shared a bag of toffee and nut popcorn at the cinema, but that doesn’t count as it’s against the law to watch a movie without popcorn, so obviously the calories don’t register.
And so, after a week of quaffing water like it’s going out of fashion, learning a little self control and pulling on the walking boots, here it is; the moment of truth. (Oh lordy, I’m nervous as HELL!)
Just the stats: Tara Cain
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 168 lbs.
- Goal weight: 140 lbs.
- Weight today: 166 lbs
- Amount lost this week: 2 lbs.
So, I haven’t broken any records and I can’t go on a spending spree for a new pair of jeans/shoes (you know what I’m talking about don’t you ThatGirl39?) but those 2 pounds are coming OFF my stats and I’m going to leap in the air and do a woo hoo for that.

Relying on one piece of data captured as a snapshot on a specific day (Wednesday), isn’t particularly scientific. And if the single piece of data doesn’t say what you want it to say it’s easy to become despondent. That’s why I’m looking at several bits of data every week and it’s why I weigh once a day – SHOCK, HORROR.
It’s not for the feint hearted but it works better for me because the readings give me a trend for the week.
There’s so much at play with body weight. It can vary tremendously from day to day or hour to hour. For example, your weight can be significantly affected by the levels glycogen you have stored up (or perhaps depleted through vigorous exercise) or just the fact that you’re not regular with your twosies.
Watching the trends can work really well, but you have to be able to take the rough with the smooth and not get too hung up on every variation.
Remember, your weight will vary throughout the day and often over the course of a couple of days, so keep this in mind. Accept that from time to time you will get some bizarre readings, whether you weigh once a day or once a week. When that happens, fall back to looking at the trend.
If you choose to weigh-in daily…. Weigh just once! At the same time everyday – after you’ve been to the loo, before you shower (and absorb a gallon of water) and while you’re wearing your flimsiest knickers and bra (unless you dare to get all nuded up
). Then, LEAVE THE SCALE ALONE until the next day.
Just the stats: David Fowler
Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 200 lbs.
Goal weight 173 lbs.
Format: Start / Last Week / This Week
- Weight: 200 / 200 / 198
- Amount lost this week: 2 lbs.
- Hips: 40 / 40 / 39.75
- Waist: 38.5 / 38.5 / 38.5
- Belly: 40.25 / 40.25 / 40
- Chest: 41.5 / 41.5 / 41.25
(Weight is in lbs and measurements in inches)

My first week was hardly the banner break out week I was hoping. What happened, you ask? Well, life happened. As anyone who follows my blog knows, my schedule has been pretty much dictated by my son’s bouts of sleeplessness and separation anxiety.
Yeah, I know, excuses, excuses.
I need to find a way to leap when such hurdles come my way as surely such hurdles are a frequency when you have a 19 month old.
Despite a consistent workout routine, I managed to lose one pound this week, better then I’d feared.
However, I’ll likely be passing up on the really good food tomorrow.
Just the stats: David Wright
- Starting weight Wed. Nov.19: 350 lbs.
- Goal weight: 250 lbs.
- Weight today: 349 lbs
- Amount lost this week: 1 lb.
Now it’s your turn.

@Tara – 2 lbs is perfect weight loss. The goal should be 1.5 to 2 lbs per week. And it is absolutely a rule that popcorn MUST be consumed at the theatre.
@David F – I get ‘nuded up’ to step on the scales. Although you must look really interesting standing on the scale in your bra and knickers. Woot to your 2 lbs as well!
@DavidW hey, ain’t nothing wrong with 1 lb! Woot to you, too!
Oh dear, it’s my turn. I’ve been procrastinating. Okay, I gained back 2 lbs of the 3 lbs I lost. BUT I am going with David F’s theory about glycogen and twosies. Actually, the Lion and I celebrated our 1 Year Anniversary and that involved copious amounts of mimosas and wine and bread and cheese … and there were all those homebaked cookies yesterday in the kitchen at work, and it was the first snow fall of the year, and quite dreary, and well … HOWEVER! Since the last weigh in, I have been to the gym 3 times AND taken 1 fitness class.
Interesting thing about the cookies yesterday, is that after I had eaten them (and I won’t say how many) I didn’t feel very good and they really ceased to taste all that good after the first two. So, I am going to remind myself of that the next time there are baked goods at work.
Excellent first week, Trio!

Panther, I like the sound of your party. Mimosas, bread and cheese? If you’re going to celebrate then do it in style (then back on the water again the next day!)

Your one year anniversary is pretty cool. Congrats.
The 2lbs could easily be water weight. Easily.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think a pint of water weighs around a pound.
I’m going to give you a big WOOO HOOO for the gym and the fitness class.

@Tara – Happy dance for Tara! You go girl! Keep it up with the water.
@ Dave F- I weigh most every day too. That way I’m not going – “what in the world happened” one day a week. But I do have to look at the overall trend too. (The geek in me graphs this out and looks at 3 months of data.) Thumbs up!
@ Dave W. – 1 lb is a start! The first month I started trying to loose weight I swear my body didn’t want to budge from that weight and it tried to punish me by gaining a bit more. (Muscle weighs more and you’ll be gaining some of that good muscle – so keep that in mind.) Keep at it you will get there and you’ve got a good start!
I did weigh in today, here.

Yep, I think keeping the data is a good idea. It;s a good way to track changes especially when you compare the data to what was going on in your life at various times. It helps to give a better understanding of the factors involed in your progress.
I’m going to finish up here and track over to your place.

I’ll be doing my blog post later, but just wanted to report on progress so far. I’ve lost 1.5lbs since last week, which I’m pleased about because I’m aiming to lose it gradually (1 – 2lb each week). I’m not into quick wins, I’m in this for the long-term, this has got to be a lifestyle changing experience because I don’t want to regain any lost weight.
Well done Tara, Dave and David – and don’t apologise for ‘only’ losing one pound David – if it’s a loss, then it’s a good result. Each journey starts with a single step.

That’s just brilliant notSupermum. You are absolutely right to aim for the long-term win and 1½lb loss has set you on that path.

Wooo Hooo, yeah! 1.5 lbs os the way to go. From what I understand weight loss doesn’t want to be much more than 2lbs a week, so I think you’re in the ideal range.
Good going notSupermum!

Yay to the Losers and Naked Weighers!!! Well done Tara, Dave and Dave!! This baby steps thing is good – the only way to go I think! And yes Tara – I know exactly what you mean and have already penciled in a shopping trip to Westfield (see Grazia!), just before the birthday next May!
What I did differently:
Some form of exercise/activity every day
Drank more water
Ate smaller portions for my evening meal
Ate more fruit or healthy snacks in the day
I didn’t stay off the red wine as much as I’d liked too have and did over indulge a few times but overall I’m pleased with the progress! Imagine what a skinny minny I could be if I had less vino!!! (Shush voices in my head – it might happen).
p.s. is it normal for your arse cheeks to ache this much after introducing them to exercise again?!?

Arse? did she just say arse? Arse? (sounds really really funny if you keep saying it over and over and over and . . . )

BABY!
I love the stuff that you did differently. Those small changes will make the world of difference even if it’s just to the way your arse cheeks feel. To you that is. Not that I’m saying you feel your….. oh never mind. I’m just making it worse!
Yeah, I think some muslce pain is to be expected initially but a hot bath and some sort of rubbing compound will probably help. Actually. I don’t know of that’s true but what the hell, give it a go.

No progress… and it wasn’t from procrastination or seasonal illness, though I have been ill. (Details on my blog’s Wednesday weigh-in post)
This is the hardest time of the year to be losing weight. Colder weather, less activity, the holiday season — all of these work against us.
Best of luck to everyone — and keep plugging away at it!

It is the hardest time of the year Mike (for me it’s the thought of all those hotpots and spicy chilli meals) but just think, if you can achieve it now, what will you achieve in the ‘easy’ months?
It doesn’t matter that you have had no progress, at least it has been on your mind and so those changes will seep in somehow!

Good on you Mike for coming back to report that.
I’ll be along to find out the story when I’ve finished here, but I’m sure you know it’s not necessarily true that you made no progress. There are many factors involved.
I have to admit though, that it is a tough time of year to start!

Amount lost this week: 0.6 lbs.
I’m working on working out more this week. For some reason that is the hardest thing to incorporate into my life.

Stacey, nice job!
I haven’t yet started the official exercise part yet, although I have been walkng regularly so I’m looking forward to breaking into a run.
Perhaps you struggle to get the exercise in because you’re a blogger and have no time of your own anymore?

I don’t like scales, so I’m not sure if I lost anything this week. However, I did do well in avoiding gratuitous sugar (i.e. candy, baked goods, soda, etc.). I figure if I can severely restrict my sugar intake, I’ll be doing a LOT better.
And Dave– eat some of everything at the Thanksgiving table. The trick is to only put one spoonful of everything on the plate. You’d be surprised at how filling that is! And you HAVE to eat pumpkin pie. I said so.

Congratulations, everyone! This teensy steps thing might just work wonders.
(And for the record, I think 2 lbs is HUGE!) I’m happy to report that I remembered to half-size my portions about half the time.
That gained me enough headway that I was ready for the in-laws’ visit this week, for the holiday. We’ve been eating. Bad things. Lots of bad things. And I’ve STILL halved my portions. Sometimes. Enough so that a pair of previously snug shorts are less snug. (!) That counts as progress in my book.

I very impressed with your self-control on the portion size. It’s not an easy thing to do, but you’ve done it. Well done!
Keep on with the teensy steps Julie
